Counting Stars
With a flurry of activity on the recruiting trail this week, it's time to take a look at where KU stands with the big recruits compared to previous years. The table below compares five-, four- and three-star commitments since 2002 and shows why the last two recruiting classes were so highly regarded by KU fans. With the 6-6 season and plenty of close losses on TV this year, fans were concerned that this year's class might be a complete miss. Looking at the numbers, there could be a slight drop-off this year, but it looks like Mark Mangino should easily surpass the previous lows of 2004 and 2002. This program will obviously be centered around the 2005 and 2006 classes. A small drop off for one year shouldn't affect the overall growth of the program if KU can get back to a bowl game next year. Another thing to consider is that Mangino doesn't put too much stock in recruiting service ratings. He's certainly proven that by finding a lot of gems among the two-star recruits that he's hauled in over the years.
