NU/OU Overload
Everyone's waxing nostalgic over the Nebraska/OU Big 12 championship today. And maybe I'll take a moment to remember back to the old conference and being a kid and all; however, let's not go overboard on the Sooners and Huskers memories. Frankly, I got sick of watching OU and Nebraska battle it out for the conference title every single year (OU or NU won or had a share of the title every year but two during 1970-1995). Just as I question an organization that will allow itself to fail 36 straight times vs a single opponent in an athletic competition, I question the collective efforts of the six other Big 8 schools that would allow themselves to be dominated in such a fashion. Thank God Colorado gave us some relief by snagging a pair of titles in 1989 and 1990.
Sure, I have my problems with the Texas-run Big 12 conference, but today will offer up the best perk from the creation of the new league--the Big 12 Championship Game. When it was unveiled in 1996, we finally had a post season game that meant something. And unlike the bowl games and a scheduled yearly championship between OU/NU, the game is pure. You earn it on the field. Sure those BCS games are nice and all, but in Big 12 country this is really the only game that matters.
Is this bitter attitude toward the OU/NU rivalry just sour grapes from a jealous KU football fan? Absolutely. But I'll be watching today and not due to the old rivalry. I'll be watching to see the two teams that slugged through a tough conference and earned a chance to play for a conference title.
Big 12 TV Contract
The KC Star had an article on the upcoming TV deal negotiations in today's print version. The story hasn't been posted online yet, but here's a link to all of the major conference deals. The Big 10 is going to have it's own channel? Are you kidding me?
